Weekly Releases: Lou Phelps, Hardy Caprio, Kendrick Lamar, Little Dragon & IshDARR

This week’s releases are for the Hip Hop heads – as we’ve got four incredible records from the likes of Lou Phelps, Hardy Caprio, IshDARR and of course Kendrick Lamar for you to tuck into. Completing the lineup is the latest album from Swedish quartet Little Dragon who continue to impress in Season High.

Croydon based rapper Hardy Caprio is on the come up and it’s about time you acquainted yourself with his unrelenting music. As versatile as any, Caprio will fire his bars over any beat – whether it’s the lush sounds of “Together”, the vibey atmospherics of “M&Ms” or the explosive “Big Poppa” and his “Hollywood Taker” trio of tracks all of which are lifted from his The Hollywood EP.

Having humbled his contemporaries with the magnificent “HUMBLE.” earlier this month, Kendrick Lamar released his fourth studio album DAMN. this past Friday. We’ll put the album in perspective for you: with the last three song titles on the record: “FEAR.” “GOD.” “DUCKWORTH.”. Why? Because no other rapper comes half as close to K Dot when it comes to songwriting and delivery, but more importantly – storytelling. Needless to say, just press play and bask in King Kendrick’s greatness.

It’s been ten years since Swedish four-piece Little Dragon released their self-titled debut album and a decade on, they’re still sounding as fresh and charming as ever. Fronted by the gorgeously rich and silky musings of Yukimi Nagano, the band continue to deliver their mesmerising pop gems laden with groove in their fifth studio album Season High which features the previously heard singles “High” and “Sweet”. Perfect for the summery days to comes, this record will put a smile on your face and have you dancing along from the get go.

How many rappers can say that they’ve landed an acting role with Matthew McConaughey? The answer is one – IshDARR. This past week, the Milwaukee based rapper dropped his Four The Better EP to follow up last year’s Broken Hearts & Bankrolls. Packed with lush instrumentation that floats between Hip Hop, trap with a peppering of jazz inflections here and there, the six-track project is IshDARR’s most affirmed and cohesive offering to date. Oh, and the saxophone on “FREE” is heavenly!

There’s a lot to live up to when you’re the brother of a producer as renowned as Kaytranada, comparisons are inevitable, but Lou Phelps has managed to pave a path of his own with his slick dose of Hip Hop. This past week the Canadian artist dropped his 001: Experiments mixtape which features collaborations with  KALLIETCHINS, CJ Flemings, Innanet James and Bishop Nehru as well as production by the likes of Tek.Lun and of course, Kaytranada. A swirling vortex of smooth sounds and sharp performances, the eight-track project is definitely one not to miss.
