Part of the L‘Entourage crew representing the 9th District of Paris, Doums is a rapper that you definitely need to hear. Having been inspired after “seeing my elder brother (Dr. Beriz) being the notorious rapper” that he is, Doums dove head first into the music business through freestyling in 2008. Fast forward a few months, Doums met his sound brothers, who’ve stayed the same to this very day.
Inspired by the likes of Tupac, Erykah Badu as well as MC’s from his district and his crew, Doums explains how he likes to rap about the crooked world we live in, and how to make fun of it. This parallel of wearing his heart on his sleeve when it comes to rapping about current affairs and society today whilst turning the tables by maintaining an air of playfulness is a facet of Doums’ artistry that truly shines through. Ultimately, the music is medium for Doums to represent his ancestors from Africa along with his friends in Paris and all over the world.
“I LIKE TO RAP ABOUT THE CROOKED WORLD WE LIVE IN, AND HOW TO MAKE FUN OF IT.”
Speaking on his creative process, Doums details how he usually tends to write lyrics on my phone or even in his head before going into the recording booth to “put the pieces together”. This spontaneity comes across wonderfully in his songs, because although the words may be inspired in the spur of the moment, the process of putting the pieces back together becomes increasingly important as otherwise the end result wouldn’t be as cohesive or fluid. However, that’s not the case with Doums as everything feels natural, each line flows beautifully into the next, effortlessly weaving through the lush soundscapes – and it’s here, where the magic to his work truly lies.
“I REPRESENT MY ANCESTORS FROM AFRICA AND MY FRIENDS IN PARIS AND ALL OVER THE WORLD”
As for the future, Doums is set to release his first solo project called Coulibaly (which is his family name) later this year, and hopes that “you’ll enjoy it”. If it’s anything like “Intro”, the delightful unreleased track which he performed as part of his COLORS show, it’s safe to say that we’re in for a treat!
