Siboy is one of the new faces to come out of the bubbling French rap scene. A face with outlines, which he chooses to leave in the shadows, creating an air of mystery around him. Just like other rappers, from Kekra and Kalash Criminel in France to Leikeli47 in the United States, this 26-year-old native of Congo decided to hide his identity under an intimidating, black woollen ski mask. The reasoning behind this choice however is purely to maintain his privacy, “I think it helps shy artists to feel more free”, he explains.
Despite this predilection for discretion, Siboy style is uncanny. His teeth, covered with bright silvered grillz, along with his massive golden rings and a pair of large chains are his mediums to express his identity. For his first appearance on French television, the young man adorned himself with a flashy orange bomber jacket which he matched with a ski mask of the same color (his favorite, obviously). Speaking on his look, Siboy explains how “the ski mask and the jewels are my two fashion essentials” but went onto say that his style isn’t something to pinpoint as he likes to “try new things, experiment”.
“TRY NEW THINGS, EXPERIMENT”
The same goes for his music too, Siboy is not a big fan of routine. Through his first album Spécial, released this past June via 92i Records (the powerful, coveted label of his mentor Booba, the most recognisable man in contemporary French rap scene), Siboy immerses his audience in sometimes dark and aggressive (“Téléphone”, “Hitch” and “Au revoir merci”), sometimes melancholic and bewitching (“Un jour”, “Spécial”, “Déterminé”) atmospheres, exposing his diverse and unpredictable world.
“I ALMOST NEVER PLAN TO TALK ABOUT THIS OR THAT BEFORE LISTENING TO THE PRODUCTION AND THIS SYSTEM SEEMS TO WORK PRETTY WELL: THE TRACKS THAT PEOPLE LIKE THE MOST ARE THE ONES I DID NOT PREDICT.”
As Siboy eloquently puts, music is an extension of human beings. The words are a response to a specific beat, just like how a human would respond to a specific situation. Looking back to when he started, Siboy recounts how he “started music as a beatmaker”, which is what inspired him to start writing a song in the first place “it’s always the starting point”, he confides.
Thanks to this intuitive creative process, Siboy is unsurprisingly considered as one of the most promising rappers to come out of the French scene. But in spite of this comfortable status, the curious balaclava adept does not want to settle for one unique destiny:“I’ve noticed how rap music and fashion are connected nowadays”, he rightly analyzes. Expression through music and the clothes that we wear are a “ “form a recognition, and it’s also very good for business.” Humble but ambitious, Siboy, in a paradoxically childish and conquering voice, concludes with a final thought “Things are changing. And we, as rappers, have to make good use of that.”
